Born in Saint Petersburg in 1980. Based in Switzerland.

My ongoing project “State Business”, launched in 2010, focuses on the conflict commodities & surveillance industrial complex. At the same time I’m working on two further projects. “Privileged|Confidential” looks at shifts of political power, and the entities and individuals who attempt to hold on to it by adapting to political regimes. “Empty with a whiff of blood and fumes” addresses the nexus of money, power, and organised crime in Ukraine, as a prelude for the 2014 civil war.

Between 2007 and 2010, I worked in the Russian North Caucasus on “File-126”, a project about abductions of civilians that took place under the guise of Russian counterterrorism regime.

My work has been published in Le Monde, XXI, The New Yorker, BJP, Aperture, Esquire, and The New York Times. It has been exhibited with Noorderlicht, the Open Society Foundation, Paris Photo, Unseen, and Fotomuseum Winterthur.

My primary academic background is in art history, with course work in genocide studies, and a year in photography at the Danish Media and Journalism School. In 2011, I spent a year as artist in residency at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France. In 2013 I received a Magnum Emergency Fund backing. download CV
